[France vs New Zealand] |
Now a Havelock North local, Juliet Harbutt is one of the world's leading authorities on all things cheese. Having established and run the British Cheese Awards for 22 years, she is a world-renowned cheese expert, author and judge.
In this event developed for the Association, Juliet will guide us in a tasting of Old vs New World (French vs New Zealand) cheeses. This will be an educational and entertaining afternoon at Juliet’s house, delivered with her enthusiasm and sprinkled with some of her many stories. It will be an event to remember! |

Old vs New World cheeses
Many of the great classics of the cheese world come from France. Like good wine, a good cheese is the product of its terroir - the climate, soil, and other growing conditions combining to give a unique, local flavour. For 250 years, the New World has tried to copy Old World cheese styles, but with little success as they ignore the effect of terroir.
In New Zealand, we have access to an increasing range of artisan-produced cheeses with their own flavours and character. Perhaps these express forms of New Zealand terroir?
Join Juliet and l'Association Française de Hawkes Bay for an afternoon of cheese tasting and discover for yourself which cheeses New Zealand makes well and which French cheeses cannot be copied.
