2023 is a great opportunity to join our French lessons.
Term 3: 20 July to 21 September (10 weeks) Please read the information below and if you haven't already attended our classes, please take the test. If you are an absolute beginner it is better to start at the beginning of the year. If you have learnt some French before, we will be able to enrol you at the appropriate level. Contact Arnaud, our new lesson coordinator by filling out the form below for registration and on the right(or further down on a phone) for questions. If you are not a member, your lessons will be cheaper if you join the Hawke's Bay French Association. Please click here for membership information.

Class Levels
We have five levels of classes, covering from absolute beginners to advanced. The method, called FLE for "Français Langue Étrangère"(French as a foreign language), is similar to ESOL (English for speakers of other languages). The principle is to have an environment as close as possible to what you will find in France. In recordings, people talk fast (actually they do not really, but it seems like it) and, at the beginning, you grasp only a word here and there but it gets rapidly better. Do not worry, you will be fine. We use the "Édito" series of books by Didier. Most have the new Edito. There is a method book and an exercise book which have support material that is available online by using the DidierFle app and scanning it with your phone. Click here to go to the accompanying website (in French) and then choose which book. You will need the last word of a page to access the resources. The price for a set of books and CD/DVD is currently $60 and the book for each level is useable for 2 years. Lesson location
The lessons are held in the English Block adjacent to the Travers Centre, at Hastings Girls’ High School, Pākowhai Road, There is a small car park in front of the Travers Centre, where you can park. When going north from Stortford Lodge on Pakowhai Road, take the first entrance (stone wall and name of the school on the wall) and then sharp left. If this carpark is full, you can use the school main car park. When coming from Stortford Lodge, do not take the first entrance but the second entrance which is 40 m further north, pass the swimming pool on your left and park wherever you want. See map and picture at the bottom of this page for details |
Lesson Times
Our lessons are held every Thursday at Hastings Girls' High School (during school terms) from 6pm to 7:30pm Dates each year are in accordance with the New Zealand school terms: Term 1: 9 February to 6 April (9 weeks) Term 2: 27 April to 29 June (10 weeks) Term 3: 20 July to 21 September (10 weeks) Term 4: 12 October to 7 December (9 weeks - tbc) Lesson Cost
The Association provides French lessons on a not-for-profit basis so that the cost is not a financial barrier to whoever wishes to learn French. You will need a set of books which cost $60 for two books including CD+DVD or or free online access to sound recordings. The cost for the lessons $15 per lesson for members and $20 for non-members. Lessons are 1.5 hours from 6pm to 7:30pm. Lessons are paid for on a term by term basis and no credit is given for lessons missed unless they are cancelled by the Association. However in the event that you have work or holiday commitments of one period per term of two or more consecutive weeks and inform Arnaud, our coordinator and Roger, our Treasurer, of the dates before the start of term, we would like you to continue learning and you will only have to pay for the lessons in that term excluding the ones that you have notified to Arnaud or Roger. For students who would like to commit to and pay for a full year’s learning and pay in advance we offer a 20% discount. If lessons are paid for on this basis, there is no credit given for any lessons missed apart from those cancelled by the Association Lessons should be paid for at the start of term/year and at the latest before the second lesson. |
The "Test" (which we would like all new students to complete):
The reasons for testing is to help us decide what will be the starting point of each group and place the students in the appropriate group . If during the term , you wish to try another group because it is too easy or too difficult, you are absolutely free to move as often as you wish.
Please do this French Level test. Please note some questions are listening and may require you to push play.
Please try to go swiftly through all the questions and let me know what score you achieved
Do not worry whether you fare well or not that well. If you knew all the answers you would not need to attend our courses, would you ?
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or Roger (for the financial questions).
Kind regards
Arnaud
