A message from the Lesson Coordinator:
Bonjour à tous et à toutes, Here is some information on what, when, where, how much and a short test: Class Levels We have six levels of classes, covering from absolute beginners to advanced. The method, called FLE for "Français Langue Étrangère"(French as a foreign language), is similar to ESOL. We use the "Édito" series of books by Didier. Most have the new Edito. There is a method book and an exercise book which have support material that is available online by using the DidierFle app and scanning it with your phone. The price for a set of books is currently $60 and the curriculum for each level is taught over 2 years so a set of books lasts 2 years. Lesson location
The lessons are held at Hastings Girls’ High School, Pākowhai Road. We use the English Block adjacent to the Travers Centre. See map and picture at the bottom of this page for details Lesson Times
Our lessons are held on Thursday’s at Hastings Girls' High School from 6pm to 7:30pm Dates each year are in accordance with the New Zealand school terms: 2024 Term 1: 8 February to 11 April (10 weeks) Term 2: 2 May to 4 July (10 weeks) Term 3: 25 July to 26 September (10 weeks) Term 4: 17 October to 5 December (8 weeks) tbc |
Lesson Cost
The Association provides French lessons on a not-for-profit basis. You require a set of books ($60) and to become a member of the Association (for cheaper lessons).
The Absolute Beginner class requires a full year commitment - cost of $500, which includes a full year of lessons, books and membership of the Association. This discounted price is available to new students. All fees are payable at the start of each term. The normal term by term cost equates to $15/lesson ($20 for non-members), no credit is given for lessons missed unless they are cancelled by the Association. If, however, you have a planned commitment and can’t attend two or more consecutive lessons, please inform Arnaud (Coordinator) or Roger (Treasurer) of the dates via email before the start of term and there will be no cost of notified lessons. There is a 20% discount for students who pay in advance for a full year’s learning, however, there is no credit for any lessons missed unless cancelled by the Association. Lessons should be paid for at the start of term/year and at the latest before the second lesson. |
The "Test" (which we would like all new students to complete):
The test helps us decide the best starting class for potential students. If during the term , you wish to try another group because it is too easy or too difficult, you are absolutely free to move as often as you wish.
Please do this French Level test. Note that some questions are listening and may require you to push play.
Go swiftly through all the questions and let me know what score you achieve.

Do not worry about the test. If you knew all the answers you would not need to attend our courses!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (or Roger for the financial questions).

Hastings Girls' High School - our lesson venue.
Parking is in front of the Travers Centre.
When going north from Stortford Lodge on Pakowhai Road, take the first entrance (stone wall and name of the school on the wall) and then sharp left. If this carpark is full, you can use the school main car park. When coming from Stortford Lodge, do not take the first entrance but the second entrance which is 40 m further north, pass the swimming pool on your left and park wherever you want. Go to the right of the Centre and turn right and it is the building next to it but you enter around the far side
