![]() About French Friday Film
We have curated a selection of French films from the Institut Français database and screen them in the Concert Chamber at the CHB Municipal Theatre, Kenilworth Street in Waipawa. A touch of France to Central Hawke's Bay! One of our long-time members of AFHB, TeAra, is the brainchild behind this bimonthly community event. So why not join us... once every two months in Waipawa for this suggested $10 koha/donation event to liven up your Friday nights? Any profits from koha will go towards The Food Basket CHB. |
Critics' quotes:
"Plus qu’un documentaire fastidieux sur la fabrication du vin, L’âme du vin est à l’image de son titre, à savoir une déclinaison poétique et passionnée du nectar français. " - AVoirALire.com
"French filmmaker Marie-Ange Gorbanevsky didn’t know much about wine before she started filming her fifth documentary, L’Âme du Vin (The Soul of Wine). But she figured out pretty quickly where the action was" - Wine Spectator

L'Âme du vin (2019) No rating 94 minutes Documentary ENG: Wine is birthed from the encounter between land, sky, and Man. Each year in Burgundy, the success of its vintage is a veritable epic. Work in the vineyards and wine cellars throughout the seasons gives fruit to wine that is exceptional, lively, highly sought-after, and admired all around the world: Romanée-Conti, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Mersault, Volnay - These wines carry with them a plot of the earth they sprang from, as well as the soul of the workers who gave them life. |
2024 Season:
At the start of this project in 2022 we were given a year or so to trial the Institut Francais database as well as see what sort of numbers would attend.
We have made a few changes during this time: 1. Move into the Concert Chamber 2. Have a carousel of ads and music at the start and end of the film. 3. Ask audience feedback directly at these evenings. There is a small group of enthusiastic locals who have kept this going but on our journey we have discovered winter is not always the best time to screen films. We have also discovered with our database that some films do not have Censor's Certificates for New Zealand so this has limited our choice of films. We really do need at least 30 people to attend every month for this to continue so encourage your friends, etc |
